On a national scale...

We are a chapter located in Sugar Land, Texas of the national organization Mu Alpha Theta. Call us a math club, math team, math honors society -- whatever suits you best.

On a state scale...

We travel to and compete at the annual state convention in events such as Number Sense, Calculator, Algebra I (O/C), Geometry (O/C), Algebra II (O/C), Precalculus (O/C), Calculus (O), and Advanced Topics. We have won three of the last four state championships (1998, 1999, 2001).

On a local scale...

We do a number of activities as a club.

Typically, we fundraise at the beginning of the year by selling candy so that we can attend the many tournaments we usually win sweepstakes at. Candy sales are required to participate in all math club activities. Also, not attending tournaments and claiming math club membership is generally frowned upon.

In preparation for tournaments, weekly problem sets are usually distributed at meetings to be completed by the next meeting. After school, there are usually one or two math workshops in a week. See Cynthia or Yeeland for details.

Then we host an academic tournament in early February in which many teams from around the state come to compete. Last year's competitors included Bellaire, Clear Lake, Georgetown, A&M Consolidated, Austin, Taylor, Stafford, Kempner, Jersey Village, Dulles, Hastings, Clear Brook, and Terry High Schools. We are hoping that more schools will be joining us this year. For more details, please visit our tournament page: https://chsmao.tripod.com/tourney.html

After our tournament, we return to competing at the state convention, Rice University, and any other tournaments that may come after February. We have won at Rice the last two years.

In April, we hold our elections for the following school year. Offices are President, Vice President, Contest Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter/Historian, Sergeant-At-Arms, Tournament Director, and Webmaster. Members must meet certain requirements to run for certain offices.

In May (after APs ^_^), we party. That's when we have our end-of-the-year party as one last gathering for the club.
